When tracing the history of the tarot back through the ages, one can pinpoint when the first decks appeared in Italy in the 14th century. It is believed that the royal court designed the cards and gave them out to the masses as a way to help teach virtues and to entertain at the same time.

One of those virtues, Strength, is the eleventh or the eighth card in the major arcana, depending on the deck that you are using.Strength is one of four virtues, although prudence is missing in most tarot decks, while strength, temperance and justice all have managed to find their place within the average tarot deck.

Most folks would attribute these virtues being depicted on tarot cards as direct link between the Italian people and the ironclad grip the Roman Catholic Church had on the local populations in the 14th century.

While most western tarot decks did become Christianized over the years, the four major virtues actually go back to the teachings of ancient Greek philosophers like Aristotle. It should not be any surprise that the original number of virtues were four.

Four has been a powerful number throughout human history because of the association of four seasons in a year, four points on a compass and so on. In later years, Christian influence added three more virtues, love, hope and faith, raising the number of basic virtues to seven, an even more powerful number.

The varying position, even to this day, of the Strength card isn’t much of a surprise to tarot scholars. Cards have always found different places in the deck, even the trump cards, depending on what region you were visiting.

Many decks place the three tarot virtues, Strength, Temperance and Justice, all together in the deck, while other decks separate them.

Decks vary from placing Strength towards the back of the trump cards, with Justice at the top, adding far more meaning to that card than most decks do. Other decks have the three virtue cards together as a whole, while others have each virtue card separated by the same number of cards, and the opposites of each virtue immediately following every virtue card.

The physical depiction of the Strength card has also changed quite a bit over the centuries. Originally, the drawing showed a female warrior holding, or breaking a stone column in half with one hand while a demure lion sat at attention at her feet.

Later decks showed the Strength card as more of a battle between the lion and the human figure, with the figure, sometimes male, sometimes female, beating the lion with a stick. Later versions simply showed a female figure astride a lion, taming it and controlling it.And that is truly the root of the Strength card.

The most common interpretation of the card is that it stands for control and victory over forces that wish to distract you, or make you impure. There is a definite connection, again, to the temperance card.

By staying away from material possessions and excessive wealth, you’ll be happier and on a much more pure spiritual plain.It has long been believed that the depiction of the lion and the female figure on the Strength card represents a battle that is constantly being waged inside of us.

The lion represents what Freud would say is your Id, or your carnal desire center. The female on the card would be your Super Ego or the taught portion of the brain. These two are constantly in battle against each other, the Id, or the lion, wants nothing but pleasure regardless of the moral and ethical consequences, while the woman, or the super ego, wants to be civilized, proper and respectable.

In most cases, when the Strength card comes up during a reading, it is a positive sign. It means that, in the context of your question, that you are resisting the bodily desires of your lion and living out your life and accomplishing your goals in a proper, respectful, and if you want, a decidedly Christian, manor.

The Christian influence on the tarot can be easily seen with the Strength card. When the card appears reversed however, it can be assumed that you are allowing immorality and carnal temptations distract you from the life you should be living, or could be living. Of course, like anything else within tarot, the interpretation depends on the original question asked at the time of your reading.

The Tarot

The word Tarot comes from the Sanskrit and means "fixed star," which in its turn signifies immutable tradition, theosophical synthesis, symbolism of primitive dogma, etc. Graven on golden plates, the designs were used by Hermes Trismegistus and their mysteries were only revealed to the highest grades of the priesthood of Isis. It is unnecessary to say that the Tarot is of Egyptian origin and the work of M. Falconnier has been to reconstruct its primitive form, which he does by reference to the monuments that is to say, after the fashion of Éliphas Lévi, he draws the designs of the Trumps Major in imitation of Egyptian art.

This production has been hailed by French occultists as presenting the Tarot in its perfection, but the same has been said of the designs of Oswald Wirth, which are quite unlike and not Egyptian at all. To be frank, these kinds of foolery may be as much as can be expected from the Sanctuary of the Comédie-Française, to which the author belongs, and it should be reserved.

Explaination on different Cards.

The interest of this memorial rests rather in the fact of its existence than in its intrinsic importance. There is a kind of informal commentary on the Trumps Major, or rather there are considerations which presumably had arisen there from in the mind of the French author. For example, the card called Fortitude is an opportunity for expatiation on will as the secret of strength. The Hanged Man is said to represent the completion of the Great Work. Death suggests a diatribe against Necromancy and Goëtia; but such phantoms have no existence in "the Sanctum Regnum" of life.

Temperance produces only a few vapid commonplaces, and the Devil, which is blind force, this is the occasion for repetition of much that has been said already in the earlier works of Lévi. The Tower represents the betrayal of the Great Arcanum, and this it was which caused the sword of Samael to be stretched over the Garden of Delight. Amongst the plates there is a monogram of the Gnosis, which is also that of the Tarot. The editor has thoughtfully appended some information on the Trump Cards taken from the early works of Lévi and from the commentaries of P. Christian.

Wands have been replaced with shorter, thicker batons, and in some decks, coins have been replaced altogether with pentacles. With different suits come different interpretations.

It is unknown if the overall impact of having pentacles over coins or batons over wands chances the spirit of the deck, but some readers are very loyal to one or the other.

It is thought that personalization of a deck is important because it allows the reader to feel more connected to the cards and allow for a more honest, complete and accurate reading. Some may scoff at this evolution in decks as lacking in authenticity, but many new readers wouldn’t give up their personalized deck for anything.

• Card Numbers – While most tarot decks stick with the traditional 78-card deck, there are some that choose more of a traditional playing card style with 12-card suits, instead of the traditional 14. The card, in most cases, is considered negative, but there is also a large amount of flexibility in the Devil card. There is a modicum of sacrifice with the Lovers card, the idea that the bachelor life will need to be jettisoned in favor of a caring and fulfilling relationship. The card is considered a positive building block when it comes up during a reading, a sign of good things to come.

• Wheel of Fortune – Card ten is the Wheel of Fortune. It is thought to stand for opportunities, possibilities and destiny, as well as fate, activity and life cycles. There is a strong karmic connection with the Wheel of Fortune card. The idea of “what comes around, goes around” is widely believed to exist within the Wheel of Fortune. The card also represents random chance, with the Wheel most likely standing for all the choices one makes and their positive and negative outcomes.

• Judgment – Card twenty in the tarot deck is Judgment. This is an almost universally positive card that most readers interpret to stand for hope, renewal, redemption and absolution. Even though with Judgment, there is a positive and negative side, this card is almost always thought to be a positive.

If the topic you wish to gain insight on is about money, have it be a song you associate with wealth. If it is a relationship problem, make it a song that you associate with that particular person. Don’t allow the music to be loud enough that it will disturb your meditative state, only loud enough for it to dance upon the outer reaches of your mind as you meditate.

• To get your mind into the proper frame before you even sit to meditate, spend the 10 minutes immediately before you meditate thinking about the issue you wish to gain insight on. You don’t have to do any hardcore brainstorming, just ponder it quietly. Think about different angles involved and different ways you could approach it.

• Scent can also be a strong trigger for memory and creative thought. If it all possible, try to have something near you that you associate with the problem you’re trying to resolve. If it is a relationship problem, have a small dab of cologne or perfume. If it is about money, have a scent that reminds you of wealth and prosperity. The nose and the mind work closely together, don’t underestimate the power the two can have on your meditation.

• Make sure you meditate for wisdom and insight during a time when you will not be distracted. You are essentially asking your mind to perform an elaborate series of tasks that can all be shattered by a curious child interrupting or a careless spouse stumbling upon you. Try to do this style of meditation when you’re completely alone and there is zero chance you’ll be bothered. Also, the amount of time this style of meditation takes varies greatly.

Choosing Signifiers – The Minor Arcana

One of the most common places to find a signifier is in the minor arcana of your deck. The minor arcana consists of cards in four suits – wands, cups, swords, and pentacles. Each of these suits contains cards number from one to ten, along with four “face” cards known as the king, queen, knight, and page. These face cards are often used as signifiers.

The easiest way to choose a signifier is to look at the age and gender of the question asker. Adult males, for example, are kings while adult females are queens. The two best choices for younger men are the Magician and the Fool. The Magician represents a man who is determined and focused on accomplishing a goal. He may also be creative.

The Fool, on the other hand, represents someone who has a lack of experience, who is innocent, who is irresponsible. He may also be reveling in his own freedom.

The Emperor, Hierophant, and Hermit are good choices for other men. The Emperor stands for someone who is an authority-figure who represents stability, authority, tradition, and control.

The Hierophant represents many of these same traits, but also emphasizes education and wisdom. On the other hand, the Hermit signifies a male who prefers being alone and reflecting on his life. He is probably also quiet and retrospective.

How To Master the Celtic Cross Spread Reading

Reading tarot cards requires more than knowing the meanings of each individual card in the major and minor arcana. You must also learn how to do a spread and to accurately read that spread.

A spread is a particular layout of tarot cards. Readers use a variety of spreads, but one of the most common – and the one we'll be focusing on here – is called the Celtic Cross.

Each spread is ideal for different types of readings. The Celtic Cross works best for providing a general overview of a person's current standing and future. It does not work well for specific questions.

Dealing Out the Cards

Have the person for whom you are doing the reading cut the tarot deck. Instruct them to think about the general questions they have about the future as they are handling the cards – this is important and will help the reading be more accurate.

Now you are going to deal out the cards. The first card is laid in about the center of the table and the second card is laid on top of that card but is turned sideways so you should still be able to see the previous card.

Just below those cards, you'll place the third card. Now going in clockwise direction, you'll place the fourth, fifth, and sixth cards around those in the center. All four of these cards should be lined up with the middle card.

To the right of the sixth card (which should be to the right of the first card) you'll create a vertical row of four more cards. The first of these cards (the seventh in your spread) should be the lowest with the eighth, ninth, and tenth cards placed above it in the row.

Deciphering the Cards

Each card position in the Celtic cross layout has special meaning. The meanings of these positions combined with the meaning of each individual card will allow you to provide an accurate reading.

· Position 1 – This card represents the basic theme of the individual's problems, concerns, or questions. It provides insight into the asker.

· Position 2 – This card expresses the obstacles which stand in the individual's way. It shows what he or she may have to overcome.

· Position 3 – This card illustrates what the asker is thinking or wanting consciously. Whatever this card says should not come as a surprise for the asker.

· Position 4 – This card shows what the asker is thinking, feeling, or wanting at a subconscious levels. These are things the asker may have been hiding from him or her self.

· Position 5 – This position represents the asker's past.

· Position 6 – This position represents the asker's future.

· Position 7 – This card illustrates the asker's attitude toward the current situation or towards the question.

· Position 8 – This card represents the attitudes of the people around the asker, including friends and family members.

· Position 9 – This card demonstrates either what the asker is hoping or fearing regarding the outcome of the situation.

· Position 10 – This card stands for how things are going to turn out.

Remember that as you are interpreting the Celtic Cross, you must take into consideration the meanings of each of these positions.

Sample Celtic Cross Reading

The best way to learn how to do a Celtic Cross reading is probably to see an example of how the meanings and the positions come together. Using the layout in the picture above, I've done a sample reading to illustrate what we discussed in the last section.

While you probably can't see it in the picture, the Position 1 card is The Moon. The asker is going through a difficult time either emotionally or mentally. He may be afraid of something that he can't put his finger on or may feel as if he is in danger.

In Position 2 is the Ace of Cups. His current happiness or perhaps a growing feeling of love is standing in his way of taking action or in recognizing the source of his feelings of fright. Because the Position 3 card is the Three of Swords reversed, the asker is consciously aware of the feelings of confusion that plague him.

The Five of Cups is in Position 4 meaning subconsciously the asker is feeling regret or disappointment, perhaps he has wronged someone he loves and is worrying about how to get past his mistake or perhaps someone he loves has wronged him or he is afraid they will wrong him. These things will become clearer as we read more of the cards.

The Seven of Swords reversed and the Six of Wands reversed are in Positions 5 and 6 respectively. According to the cards, the asker either received good advice in the past that he did not heed or heard gossip which may have affected his present situation. The other card signifies that his future may be marred by disloyalty or more fear.

The reading becomes clearer when we reach the reversed Queen of Swords in Position 7 because this illustrates that the asker feels as if he has been deceived by a woman. He is obviously in love with someone who has either wronged him or who he believes may have wronged him, perhaps through adultery.

On a positive note, the Ten of Pentacles in Position 8 means that the asker has a strong network of friends and family members who will be supportive of him in his time of emotional upheaval. In this way, the cards show he is wealthy. We also see that the reversed Seven of Cups in Position 9 means the asker hopes he has the will to follow through with what he knows in his heart must be done which is either to forgive the woman or to end the relationship.

Finally, in Position 10 we find the reversed Judgment card. This card shows that the asker must make a difficult decision if he is to be free of the feelings of fear and danger he is currently dealing with.

Conclusion

Doing a Celtic Cross reading is one of the easy layouts to learn, so if you are just becoming familiar with the meanings of the cards this is a good place to start. Just remember as you're deciphering the layout that the meanings of the individual cards must be interpreted based on their positions within the layout. Otherwise, the results will not as accurate as you would want.

There are many, many ways to read Tarot cards, but it helps to have a consistent method that you use each time – this way, you can think less about how you're going to read and focus completely on your subject, the cards and their meaning.

A basic reading can be boiled down to seven steps: Rituals, Shuffling, Selecting, Turning, Reading, Discussion and Refining.

Rituals: Rituals are an important part of reading the Tarot, but whatever those rituals may be will be uniquely yours. Some people take special care of their deck, wrapping in a beautiful cloth or keeping the cards in a special box. Other sleep with their cards under their pillow, to increase their connectivity with their deck, and many people feel that the must never read their own cards using their deck. Whatever rituals you employ, including the methods you use to lay out and read the cards, keep them consistent. Before reading, make a silent opening statement – a prayer or affirmation, or a greeting to your inner guide.

Shuffling: Always shuffle face-down, so no one sees the cards, and avoid bending the cards – this is no time for fancy tricks. Beyond that, there are a number of methods of shuffling. You can hold about half the deck in each hand, and insert one half down through the other half. Another method, designed for maximum hand contact with little damage to the cards, is the one recommended by Norma Cowie in her book "Tarot for Successful Living": Hold the deck face down in your dominant hand. Push some cards from the top with your thumb into the other hand.

Then, push again, but this time to the bottom of the new pile. Continue alternating a push to the top, then one to the bottom until all the cards have been transferred. At this point, put the entire deck back into your dominant hand and start over. This method can be difficult at first, but your technique will improve with practice. Stop shuffling when you feel that it's time to stop, or if a card falls from the deck (and take note of any fallen card, for it has meaning) and then return it or set it aside. If you choose to return the card to the deck and the same card turns up later in the reading, consider that significant.

Selecting: Spread the cards in a line or sem-circle, face down, above the area you will use for the layout. Ask your subject to choose a card, then slide it face down to the first position within your chosen layout, keeping it vertical, not horizontal. Add new cards in the same order to complete the layout.

Turning: Turn over the first card from side-to-side, so it is not reversed by you. Tell your subject the significance of that card's position in the spread, studying the card to get a sense of its meaning, both alone and in that position. Turn the next card only when you're ready to focus on it, repeating until all the cards are turned.

Reading: Using your knowledge of the Tarot or, if you're new, a guidebook, comment on your impressions of the meaning of the card. Don't just go by the book definitions of the cards – say whatever comes into your mind. Look at the image on the card and remark on the card's themes as they come to mind. Whatever your first impressions are, they're correct. Then analyze the meaning of the card in connection with its position and comment on it – if a card is reversed, explain its meaning ("Upright, it means _____") and then comment on its reversal ("But when reversed, it indicates ______"). Do this with each card, saying what comes to mind. Don't ask for validation from the subject yet, just share any thoughts and interpretations that come to mind. Try not to second-guess yourself or overthink what you're saying – you ant to tap into your intuition, not your intellect.

Discussion: After you've given your interpretation of the cards, ask your subject if anything you've said was particularly meaningful as regards some issue in their life. If yes, reinterpret the cards in more detail, specific to the circumstances that they describe. If your client says no, nothing sounds familiar, ask them questions and re-phrase the themes of the cards – you may well be on the right track, but need to explain the cards in a different way for the client until something rings a bell.

Refining: Once your subject gives you some feedback, reinterpret the cards in a way that's specific to the subject's situation. Tell a story tying all of the cards together, explaining them in as clear a way as possible. tying all the themes together, and perhaps using a different way of explaining them which might make it even clearer to the client. Focus on the positive aspects of the cards, and stress that nothing is carved in stone – the subject's actions can change the situation later.

If any of the cards indicate a negative event, explain again that the subject is master of their own destiny and if they change their course of action then they can remedy the situation and head off trouble. Remind the subject that the cards only reflect what's in his or her mind, and that they have free will to change the outcome of future events. If you can;t get a good read on a particular card, ask the subject to draw another and use it as a modifier – read it in connection with the original card. If a card was dropped or set aside during the shuffle, interpret it as a guidance card, offering overall advice on the entire reading as a whole.

Naturally, your style of reading Tarot cards will be unique, and you may have a method that's very different from this one. As long as you're consistent with your rituals and techniques, you'll be able to focus entirely on reading the cards without the distraction of wondering what you should be doing next.

Ordinarily these people are simply afraid of the power of the spiritual arts, and find non-conventional forms of knowledge confronting or disturbing. If you are serious about learning Tarot card divination, or are simply curious about what you might gain from having your cards read yourself, you should not let skeptics dissuade you.

In this article, I want to discuss the very important card of The Fool.

The History of the Fool

In order to grasp the meaning of The Fool in tarot, you first need to obtain an understanding of the Fool in history. In medieval times, the Fool played a very unique role in the royal medieval court. His sole job was to amuse the King and the court, and he was not bound by the same rules of social propriety or order that bound his peers. In fact, the Fool was actually expected to break with social convention in order to provide comic relief and amusement to the monarch. He was allowed to be outspoken, and was known to ridicule and tease other people who would otherwise be above reproach.

The Fool was also sometimes a very trusted consort of the King. Unlike the monarch’s other advisors, the Fool could be quite open in his opinions and views. His candid observations and analysis made him an invaluable ally to the monarch. The Fool was, in short, a welcome breath of fresh air in a society bound by strict rules.

What does the Fool mean?

Understanding the Fool’s special social place helps us to “crack open” the role of the Fool in the tarot deck. Like his actual historical counterpart, the card of The Fool forewarns of something unexpected. From my experience, before you can start to learn tarot card reading, you have to go through a process of re-educating your own mind. Anyone that wants to explore the mystical arts will usually have an innate openness to less conventional, mystical forms of knowledge.

As a tarot card reader, part of your job is to read a person’s cards in a manner that inspires trust and satisfaction in your client. You must read your client’s combination of cards in a fashion that is true to the cards but realistic and positive at the same time.

With that in mind, there is no card that inspires more dread and misunderstanding in clients than Death. For people that are unfamiliar with Death, they will naturally assume the worst when they draw this card. After all, the grim, skeletal figure of this card naturally conjures up thoughts of death, suffering and our own mortality. Many clients will assume that either they, or someone they know is about to meet their maker, if they draw this ominous card!

In fact, the card Death has absolutely nothing to do with actual death. But it is your job to allay in your client their natural fears, and point out the true meaning of the card. Actually, interpreting the card Death and explaining its true relevance to a client, is something that I regard as a rite of passage for all new tarot card readers. It tests your ability to calmly connect with your client, meaningfully “unpack” the true meaning of the cards and inspire in them trust and understanding. If you cannot do this with success, then you might need to practice more before you take you divining skills to the world!

What does Tarot Death card stand for?

As I said, the first thing you need to explain to your client is that drawing the card death should not be taken literally. It does not stand for physical death at all, despite its frightening natural implications. It is, however, a very powerful card with serious connotations.

The best way to introduce the card Death is to ask your client “What does death stand for?” The first thing your client is likely to say is actual physical death, dying and absence. After they have made the obvious literal connections, ask them to offer non-literal meanings. No doubt they will start to think more creatively by giving more abstract meanings, like “the end of something”, “the finishing of a journey”, “ending one chapter of your life, and embarking on another”. Indeed these secondary understanding of the card Death are more accurate. After all, Death is merely a symbolic card that represents the end of one thing, and the beginning of something new and unknown.

So, in a sense, Death certainly does imply that something in your client’s life is dying or coming to an end, but with that death there will come rebirth and new life.

Interpreting the Tarot Death card for your client

The card Death is a very important card because it foreshadows that your client is about to experience a significant change in their life. It is a card the signals the end of one stage in your client’s life, and the beginning of an entirely new phase. This process of ending and beginning should not be a frightening thing at all, but rather an opportunity for your client to overhaul their life.

Like when we experience a death in real life, your client should expect to feel a mixture of emotions when they end this era. Like when we say goodbye to a loved one, your client may not want to let go of the phase that is ending. They may feel unprepared, sad and want to cling to a particular situation despite the fact that it is naturally dying.

Explain to you client that when the experience the end of this era, they may feel all the emotions that accompany grief, like disbelief, anger and finally acceptance. This is all normal, and is part of the process.

Encourage your client to reflect on their past, understanding that each phase in our life has a “mortality” of its own. As with our physical existences, we cannot always control our destiny. Drawing the card Death means you client should be ready for major change, but it is your job as their reader to encourage them to embrace change philosophically, as we accept physical death philosophically.

Last points about the Tarot Death Card

Explaining the card Death to a client is a challenge but it is an important step in becoming a competent, inspiring reader. As a general point to people who want to start reading cards, there is no greater piece of advice than to first teach yourself how to be an effective communicator.

The card Death shows us that no matter how intuitive we are, no reader is worth their salt if they cannot communicate effectively. After all, your clients are relying on you and expect a faithful but positive explanation of their cards. You need to allay their fears when they draw Death, reminding them it is only symbolic not literal.
